“king of the cats”

“british folk tale”

(first recorded in 1782)
(by thomas lyttelton)
(1744 – 1779)
(died at age 35)
(a “profligate” and member of parliament)
(a “baron”)
(lived off a pension from his father)
(a bird flew into his room and told him that he had three days to live)

“king of the cats” probably existed far earlier than 1782…

a man sees a group of cats burying the “king of the cats”.  he reaches his destination and recounts the scene.  the housecat exclaims: “then i am the king of the cats!”…

(he rushes up the chimney and is never seen again…)
