(“LIGHT GATHERING” ABILITY)
“FOCAL LENGTH” / “APERTURE DIAMETER”
In photography, you would use a high f-number when you want a large depth of field, meaning most of the scene is in focus, like in landscape photography where you want both the foreground and background sharp;
while a low f-number is used to achieve a shallow depth of field, blurring the background and isolating the subject, which is ideal for portrait photography
.
Key points about f-numbers:
High f-number (small aperture):
Lets in less light.
Creates a large depth of field, keeping most of the scene in focus.
Useful for landscape photography, group photos, or situations where you want everything sharp
.
Low f-number (large aperture):
Lets in more light.
Creates a shallow depth of field, blurring the background.
Ideal for portrait photography, macro photography, or when you want to isolate a subject

(“SCENE CAPTURING” ABILITY)
A higher focal length means a narrower angle of view and a higher magnification of the image.
Focal length is the distance between the point where light rays converge and the camera’s sensor, and is usually measured in millimeters
.
Here’s what a higher focal length means:
Narrower angle of view
A longer focal length means that the lens captures a smaller area of the scene.
This makes the subject appear larger in the image
.
Higher magnification
A longer focal length means that individual elements in the image will be larger
.
Here are some examples of when a higher focal length is useful:
Wildlife and sports photography
A long telephoto lens with a focal length of over 400 mm is often used for these types of photography
.
Portraiture
A telephoto lens between 70โ200 mm can be used to take close-up photos of subjects from a distance.
A camera’s crop factor can also affect the focal length of a lens.
A cropped sensor captures less of the image, which can make the photo appear more zoomed in.
To account for this, you can multiply the focal length of the lens by the camera’s crop factor to get the effective focal length

(i’ve been using my mother’s nikon dx (d40) camera in lieu of my ‘iphone’)
it’s got that 18-55mm lens which comes in handy quite often.
can’t zoom with the iphone.
(nikon comes with ‘A – M switch’)
(for ‘automatic’ / ‘manual’ focus)
the camera came out in 2006
runs for $500
received a panasonic lumix digital camera (DMC-ZS6) from my aunt jackie for christmas 2009…
started using the camera for photo + video recording…
comes with a USB wire and rechargeable battery w/ charger…
(as well as a padded case)
purchased a targus TG-5060TR tripod that i carry with me…
although the camera platform with the screw attacher is broken…
