“songwriting secrets”

* digest as much music as you can in your youth. take ownership of your favorite artists. make sure that you are their biggest fan within your own circle of friends. link your favorite songs with every experience in your life. use the music to get you through the hard times…

* get really good on an instrument through obsessive practice. digest all the music theory you can. learn the chord progressions of your favorite songs and figure out why they work. learn the links between musical motifs + timbres and the emotions they so reliably evoke.

* extend your vocal range as far as it can go. (so you’ll have an incentive to write songs where you can show off your range). ignore naysayers who will instinctively tell you that you have a terrible voice. all singers deal with this from the get-go. except the ones who actually have a talent for singing (which just means they were born slightly ahead of the game). just make sure you’re singing from the heart and you’ll be fine.

* perform live with a backing band. be sure to incorporate your own songs into your sets, no matter how shitty they may seem to you.

* organize your songs into some overarching concept that you’ll never quite reach.

* hit the bottle hard. make a lot of peripheral friends who have something interesting to pass along. be spontaneous. hit on every girl you feel attracted to but make sure you don’t get laid. rejection is the mother of song. be sure to remember every hot girl that you could’ve gotten with had you played things differently. for this will increase narcissistic supply. which is the lifeblood of a songwriter.

* despite all the partying, keep yourself as healthy as possible (fitness/nutrition-wise). the dichotomy between your overall fitness level and how little you are getting laid will lead to a chemical reaction with angst as byproduct. and with angst as catalyst, songs will pour out of you like piss after a 6-pack.

* always have an enemy in your head. picture the girl of your dreams with some unworthy suitor. the best songwriters are masochists at heart, cuckolds in their heads.

* buy up lots of recording equipment. retreat to your room. learn how to record as a one-man band. try to make the songs sound like your favorite songs production-wise. this will take years, so you may have to cut off your social life for awhile. masturbate whenever you feel the need. don’t come out of your room until you have an album recorded that you can be sufficiently proud to play for other people.

* learn how to score your music properly. arrange all your songs for full-blown symphony orchestras. in case you ever find one at your beck and call.

* at a certain point, deny yourself the pleasure of listening to other people’s music. this is when you’ll write the next wave of songs that will define you as an artist. smoke a lot of pot (i’m talking all day, every day). start recording everything you do and learning how to make sense of the jumble. learn how to get things right on the first take instead of painstakingly overdubbing all your recordings.

* imagine the possibilities. listen to mixes from down the hall and imagine the songs to be things that they aren’t (yet). the scattered sound waves form new sonic pictures in the air. read a rabid fanboy writer’s description of his favorite artist’s music. make sure you don’t listen to the actual music. based on the literary description, imagine what the song would sound like. then write and record that song. most likely, with your years of training, it’ll turn out better + different from the music being described in the first place.

my music consists of three major themes: “love” / “war” / “fantasy”

“love songs” deal in positive relationships…

(sex/reproduction being the most extremely positive relationship)

love music requires a “muse”…

(my romantic muse is “jennifer marie markham”)

truth be told, i have had many muses over the years.  i try to limit the # to “12” at any given moment (3 pairs of “teenyboppers” / 3 pairs of “high school sweethearts” / 3 pairs of “crimson chicks” / 3 pairs of “exoticas”)

“war songs” deal in negative relationships…
(also known as “competition”)

(murder/death being the most extremely negative relationship…)

war music requires an enemy…

(my eternal enemy is “the father”)

“fantasy songs” deal in isolation…

(“total artwork” being the most extreme isolation…)

fantasy music requires a utopia…

(my utopia is “dopeland”)
