“landmarks”
“winter 1993” –>
(the ‘taylors’ initiate me in the ways of ‘rock n’ roll’)
.
.
“JEREMY”
(PEARL JAM)
(TRACK #6 ON THEIR DEBUT ALBUM “TEN”)
(which actually contained 11 tracks (with a bonus track))
(i’ve only heard 4 songs on that album and i became obsessed with them)
“JEREMY”
“ALIVE”
“EVEN FLOW”
“BLACK”
(the album was released on ‘27 august 1991’)
(so i had just turned ‘7’)
(going into ‘2nd grade’)
(but shane showed me the song about a year later)
(‘fall 1992’)
(‘age 8’)
(‘3rd grade’)
(this was the album’s 3rd single)
(behind ‘alive’ + ‘even flow’)
(all 3 songs included on ‘ten’)
(their debut single ‘alive’ was released on ‘7 july 1991’)
(with b-side ‘once’ / ‘wash’)
(but were they actually releasing ‘vinyl’ back then?)
.
.
(we were already ‘way behind’)
(‘nevermind’ had been in stores since ‘fall 1991’)
(but ‘nirvana’ seemed ‘besides the point’ to ‘8-year-old me’)
(‘pearl jam’ shrouded themselves in mystery so effectively back then)
(last gasp before the ‘internet era’ necessitated ‘shameless self-promotion’)
(little did i know how little cobain respected ‘eddie vedder’)
(or pual mccartney for that matter)
(an ‘embarrassment’?)
(“eddie’s seems like a good dude…i just don’t like his bad”)
(why not?)
(i think it’s only his goofy name that prevents him from achieving more prominent ‘iconic’ status in the grand pantheon we call ‘rock n’ roll’)
(…or maybe the fact that he chose not to get strung out on ‘heroin’ and commit suicide like his ‘yellow-haired compatriot’ done did)
.
“5 APRIL 1994” —>
“cobain blows out his brains”
(after teaasing we (the fans) for years via cryptic lyrics)
(virtually indiscernible to the average ‘ear’)
(i was not quite 10)
(‘10’ also being the title of pearl jam’s debut album)
(which i don’t think i ever owned on CD)
(but i still considered it my favorite album because i had taped most of the songs off ‘z100’)
.
“spring 1996” —>
(music teacher ‘janet fenner’ organizes beatles choral concert)
(6th grade spring)
(‘age 11’)
.
“christmas 1997” —>
(i get my first ‘acoustic guitar’)
(8th grade)
(‘age 13’)
.
“christmas 1998” —>
(‘blumberg’ + i play a ‘dual guitar recital’ at ‘saint mary’s church’)
(‘mark blumberg’ + ‘me’…)
(he was just teaching himself ‘classical guitar’ at the time)
(figured he’d try to do things more ‘properly’ than myself)
(but i have no desire to be the world’s greatest ‘classical guitarists’)
(let ‘segovia’ bask in that adulation)
(i just want to express myself through music)
(once you accept this, all the ego games go out the window)
(‘better’ becoming synonymous with ‘honest expression’
(…instead of ‘vocal range’ + ‘lead guitar chops’)
(i start taking ‘guitar lessons’ for a half-hour every tuesday night @ 6pm)
(the name of the shop was ‘mike’s music center’ in ‘long hill’)
(i’d usually be rushing from ‘sports practice’ during the ‘school year’)
.
*july 2009* —>
(‘atlantic records’ rep e-mails me about developing my music)
(when it was really the ‘rolland runts’ in disguise)
.
*august 2009* —>
(‘atlantic record rep’ informs me that she’s been canned and all bets are off)
.
*september 2009* —>
(‘dinosaurs’ release)
.
*october 2009* —>
(first solo joga show in years @ ‘bar east’)
(formerly ‘the underscore’)
(‘mischief night’)
.
*december 2009* —>
first ‘hip’ brooklyn showcase @ ‘vox pop cafe’
(with whole new setlist)
.
*26 december 2009* —>
