"flowers in the dirt"

.

*5 JUNE 1989*

.

*SIDE 1*

*MY BRAVE FACE*

(collaboration with ‘elvis costello’)
(under pen name “declan macmanus”)
(that’s actually his ‘birth name’)

********************************************

“ROUGH RIDE”

(terrible)

********************************************

“YOU WANT HER TOO”

(even worse)
(another ‘costello’ collaboration?)
(an even more tepid re-working of his “the girl is mine” duet with ‘michael jackson’)

********************************************

“DISTRACTIONS”

(i remember listening to this song in ‘summer 2006’)
(when i was a ‘fitness trainer’ at ‘bally total fitnes”)
(brick NJ)
(and i was stunned by a redhead female gym rat)
(“nicole manucci”)

********************************************

“WE GOT MARRIED”

“oh shut up!”

********************************************

*PUT IT THERE*

(written for his recently deceased father?)

SIDE 2:

********************************************

*FIGURE OF EIGHT*

(one of my ‘summer 2005’ jams)
(just ouf of college)
(turning 21)

(i used to use this as a “vocal range tester”)
(because he belts a few nice G#4s throughout the song)

(although on the subsequent live album ‘tripping the live fantastic’ his live vocal was pretty awful)
(when his voice started to really decline in the early 90s)
(so what?  he’s already recorded hundreds of spectacular vocal performances)

********************************************

*THIS ONE*

(another one of my ‘summer 2005’ jams)
(i always liked this song)

********************************************

“DON’T BE CARELESS LOVE”

(another ‘elvis costello’ collaboration)
(this song is particularly awful)
(and these are the same dudes that wrote so many great songs?)
(and you mean to tell me that they thought these songs were releasable?)

********************************************

“THAT DAY IS DONE”

(one of my favorites)
(the best of his ‘costello collaborations’)
(a dead man ‘singing’ at his own funeral)
(not quite george jones’ “he stopped loving her today”)
(but close enough)
(and one of paul’s final great vocal performances)

(that’s where the album title comes from)

“she sprinkles ‘flowers in the dirt’…
(that’s when the ‘pain’ began to ‘hurt’…)

********************************************

“HOW MANY PEOPLE”

(a wimpy reggae jam)
(another of paul’s “all the lonely peple songs”)
(in the vein of ‘eleanor rigby’ and ‘let it be’)
(but this trope got old by the time he released “average person’ on 1983’s “pipes of peace”)
(this one’s a little better)
(“don’t fuck with the formula!”)

********************************************

*MOTOR OF LOVE*

(an absolutely DREADFUL ‘album closer’)
(one of the worst ‘album closers’ of ALL TIME)
(only rivalled by 1976 stinker “warm and beautiful” to close out “wings at the speed of sound”)
(what the fuck happened to you, paul?)
(were’s the old pal i once knew)
(“road to damascus”)

********************************************

(“flowers in the dirt” is the 8th studio solo album by ‘paul mccartney’ under his own name)

(the album was released on ‘5 june 1989’ on ‘parlophone’, as he was embarking on his first world tour since the ‘wings over the world’ tour in 1975 – 1976)

(it was considered a ‘major return to form’, and earned ‘mccartney’ some of the best reviews he had received in years)

(the album made #1 in the ‘united kingdom’ and ‘norway’ and produced several hit singles (the first being “my brave face”))

(the ‘archive edition’ is expected to be released on ’24 march 2017′)

UPDATE:

(the album was reissued in an ‘expanded form’ in ‘march 2017’, with the original demos recorded by ‘mccartney’ and ‘elvis costello’ included as part of this release)

(those must be some particularly awful demoes!)
