“BRUCE LEE”

(1940 – 1973)
(died at age 33)
(“brain swelling”)

.

“karate”

(originates from ‘te’ (meaning “hand”) and chinese ‘kenpo’)

a martial art originating from the ryukyu islands in okinawa (japan)

the “teenage mutant ninja turtles” got me interested in karate @ age 5

i really just wanted to learn how to use their weapons…

leonardo (swords)
donatello (bow)
raphael (sais)
michelangelo (nunchuks)

at age 6 i joined the “tiger cubs”…

each father was responsible for organizing a weekend trip for the tiger troop…the old man organized the final meeting of the year…we went to a karate studio in long hill…

i remember being fascinated by the weapons on display in the front office…

i joined the studio the following year…it wasn’t “karate”…it was actually the korean martial art “taekwondo”…

“tae” –> “to break with foot”
“kwon” –> “to break with fist”
“do” –> “way/method”

in second grade, each student was assigned a night to spend with “clem” (a feline stuffed animal)…i took clem to my taekwondo class…

the studio gave me the creeps…”master moree” was a white dyke…and i had no friends…furthermore, i wasn’t paying attention when we were taught how to “sign in” after each class (to measure advancement)…therefore i noted that newer students were surpassing me in rank (which was ranked by row from left to right)…

i ended up passing a few tests (as measured by “belt color” and “belt stripes”):

white belt
orange belt
green belt
red belt
blue belt
black belt

(w / magic marker stripes)

(i don’t think i ever made it past “orange belt”)

by third grade i stopped going…i was frightened that my parents would forget to pick me up in the back parking lot (a fear later confirmed during my high school sports days)…

white robe (w/ waist tie)

i just wanted to break wood with my forearm

(and that I did during the first examination)

(master moree encouraged me to stay)

(she wanted my parents’ money)

holiday party at upstate farm

(went with mother)

(this was quite an awkward affair)

“capoeira”
(refers to areas of low vegetation in the brazilian interior)

brazilian art form
(martial arts / sports / music)

greco-roman

1896 modern olympics

(every olympics since 1908)

three 2-minute periods

(allow for pins)

(greco-roman does not allow for holds below the waist)

(difference between greco-roman + freestyle)

(so there are more throws in greco-roman wrestling)

“half-nelson”
(a 2006 film starring ryan gosling)

(south plainfield 103-pounder???)

(SP were state champs???)

my proudest wrestling matches:

pinning my opponent in my very first third grade match

beating chatham opponent

beating harvey smith of plainfield 2x

eighth grade

(beating the BR little jackhammer)

(who came out strong and took me down)

(but I outlasted him)

(putting him to his back several times with a cradle)

two come-from-behind victories sophomore year

(152 lb. junior varsity start-of-year tournament)

pinning piscataway heavyweight

avenging loss from franklin

(who had beaten me by points the day after I got accepted to harvard)

(mister riccio consoled me after the match)

(he knew I sucked)

beating the warren hills guy

(who had pinned me the year before)

(a guy even grodeck beat!)

beating the indian hills guy by points

(he was a tough 189 pounder)

(it was a saturday morning match)

(I had spent most of the night jacking off to a cheesy 80s movie)

(with really big-tittied bikini babes)

(i think that sexual energy made me wrestle a whole lot better that day)

(good thing I didn’t discover nipple stimulation back then)

(rather i’d rub my dick through my pocket in class)

obi
(a sash worn with a ‘kimono’)
