It is used by placing a lump, pinch, or “dip” of tobacco between the lip and the gum. The act of using it is called dipping. Typically, before dipping, the act of “packing” is performed, where the user places the “can” in between their thumb and middle finger, then flicks their index finger onto the lid of the can.
(dip is colloquially called “chew”, “snuff”, “chaw”, “chow”, “daps”, “baccer”, “spit tobacco”, or “mouth tobacco”, among other terms;
(because of this, it is sometimes confused with other ‘tobacco products’ —namely ‘chewing tobacco’ or ‘nasal/dry snuff’)

as a baseball player, i sensed the attraction to “dip” (or alternatively “chew”)…even “big league chew” bubble gum alluded to the prevalence of tobacco among ballers…
at age 12, my pop warner football coach anthony benish was a routine dipper…
when i started playing high school football, dipping was all the rage…same with high school wrestlers…i suppose it’s a “healthier” alternative to cigarettes (in the cardiovascular sense)…still i was afraid to try it…afraid i may swallow it…
while an intern @ cantor fitzgerald in summer 2003, i was exposed to “redman chew”…my boss gus skondras routinely chewed in the office…i never got the hang of it…
it wasn’t until my sophomore year of college that i finally tried the dip…my blockmate james dowell (a football-playing texas armyman) and nicholas sobic (a midwestern offensive lineman giant) were both big dippers…and i loved the buzz…although i never quite learned how to spit…
my brother, being a college baseball player, became a dipper himself…i believe my uncle james, being a college golfer, was also a former dipper (according to my mother)…dip seems to enhance athletic performance by settling the nerves…
in summer 2012, i started purchasing dip in earnest…it was cheaper than cigarettes and 3x as strong…i’d routinely “double dip” (which my brother calls the “horseshoe”)…i’d go through roughly a can a day for less than $5…i learned how to spit…i used plastic bottles as “spittoons”…gotta change them out regularly or they start to stink…
i found that the buzz associated with dipping was enhanced by alcohol…it also acted as a laxative (like all nicotine products)…i occasionally worried about the corrosive effects it was having on my gums…sooner or later it’ll give me mouth cancer…
and destroy my beautiful voice…
but no one listens to my songs anyway…
(it can also make you feel lightheaded and weak if you’re not careful)
