-a time zone is a ‘region’ that observes a ‘uniform standard time’ for [legal / commercial / social] purposes-
.
(‘time zones’ tend to follow the boundaries of countries and their subdivisions because it is convenient for areas in close commercial or other communication to keep the same time)
(most of the ‘time zones’ on land are offset from ‘Coordinated Universal Time’ (UTC) by a whole number of ‘hours’ (UTCβ12 to UTC+14), but a few are offset by 30 or 45 minutes (for example ‘Newfoundland Standard Time’ is UTC -03:30, ‘Nepal Standard Time’ is UTC +05:45, and ‘Indian Standard Time’ is UTC +05:30)
(some higher latitude countries use ‘daylight saving time’ for part of the year, typically by changing clocks by an ‘hour’)
(many ‘land time zones’ are skewed toward the ‘west’ of the corresponding ‘nautical time zones’)
(this also creates a “permanent daylight saving time” effect)
“Coordinated Universal Time” (UTC) (french: “Temps Universel CoordonnΓ©”) is a time standard based on International Atomic Time (TAI) with leap seconds added at irregular intervals to compensate for the Earth’s slowing rotation.
(“threw me for a loop for a second…”)
UTC is the local time at the royal observatory in greenwich (great britain)
(where the local mean solar time is defined)
(no wonder the brits are at the forefront of all trends)
(wikipedia goes by UTC in their daily updates)
(here’s graph showing fluctuations between UT1 (defined by earth’s rotation) and UTC (defined by man-made clocks))
i reckon there’s some friendly chap over in greenwich with a real fancy wristwatch and it’s tradition to walk past him and ask him for the time.
and he comes back with some clever quip like ‘whatever time i say it is, that’s what time it be! any time’s alright by me!’ wouldn’t that be a great world to live in? we should divert some (or most) of our tax dollars towards a project like this. who’s with me? i bet we’d summon some angry god if we did this.
guaranteed to be a blast!

a time zone is a region that observes a uniform standard time for legal, commercial, and social purposes. time zones tend to follow the boundaries of countries and their subdivisions because it is convenient for areas in close commercial or other communication to keep the same time.
most of the time zones on land are offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) by a whole number of hours (UTCβ12 to UTC+14), but a few are offset by 30 or 45 minutes (for example Newfoundland Standard Time is UTC -03:30, Nepal Standard Time is UTC +05:45, and Indian Standard Time is UTC +05:30). some higher latitude countries use daylight saving time for part of the year, typically by changing clocks by an hour. many land time zones are skewed toward the west of the corresponding nautical time zones. this also creates a permanent daylight saving time effect
(i grew up in the “eastern time zone”)
UTC-5
(5 hours behind UTC)
(observed in eastern time zone during “standard time”)
(“standard time” = “november – march”)
(observed in central time zone during “daylight savings time”)
UTC-4
(4 hours behind UTC)
(observed all year in the eastern caribbean)
(observed in eastern time zone during “daylight savings time”)
(observed in atlantic time zone during “standard time”)
then again, i’m not wholly unconvinced that timezone travel aren’t just dangerous alternate universes where bad things can happen.
maybe i should just travel more often.
.
(i always like to think that in some alternate time-zone, beatlemania is still going strong)
