“AIR CONDITIONERS”
(AMAZON LIST)

*i grew up in ‘mansions’ with ‘central air’*
.
(the rooms were always an “ideal” temperature)
you can thank the old man for that…
even the harvard dorm rooms were always at comfortable temperatures…
back in watchung, i dealt with an overheated basement..
.i theorized that there was a blockage in the furnace…
not sure if this was ever corrected…
for every house i’ve lived in, cheryl has bought me a window air conditioning unit…
this came in handy during summers in NYC…
i’m not sure what happened to that unit…
i assumed it was still in the watchung basement…
so she bought me another unit when i moved to brick…
unfortunately this made my bedroom the most popular spot in the house…
and the invasive roommates / “landlords” would break into my room with a butterknife (whether or not i was home) just to lounge in the cool bedroom…
furthermore, i was given shit for “running up the electricity bill” (even though the unit came with a notice saying that it would increase the annual electric bill by a mere $40)…
the “landlord” didn’t seem to understand what “annual” meant (he assumed it was $40 / month)…
i left behind the unit when i moved out of the house…
i wanted to move out as quickly as possible and cheryl’s car didn’t have enough room…
so it was a “peace offering” of sorts to the landlord (for not paying august rent)…
he claimed that he didn’t even care about the air conditioner (even though he sure exploited its benefits)…
this particular air conditioner came equipped with remote control…
so i could turn it on + off while sitting at my “desk”…
when i moved to princeton, the room began heating up to absurd levels in the spring…
even with the windows open (and the outside temperature not particularly hot), the room became a furnace…
i sweat all day (and night) to the point of dehydration…
sleep patterns all out of whack…
i blamed the small size of the room coupled with an overheated iMac…
so i resolved to put the iMac on “sleep mode” whenever i wasn’t using it (even though i was always using it)…
even when i went to sleep, the iMac functioned as a television of sorts (with youtube providing the channels)…
so when the laptop wasn’t working, i’d leave the iMac running at all times…
and for some reason, the iMac often doesn’t go automatically into “sleep mode” after a set period of idleness…
the problem got so bad that cheryl eventually bought me a fan…
but this only made the room hotter (though it helped to evaporate my sweat so that i “felt” cooler)…
blame it on the “wind chill” factor…
mun hoe was able to afford an air conditioning unit…
john the drunk (like damkani before him) grumbled about him running up the utility bill…
lisa had an air conditioner (a leftover from the former tenant)…
the 2 basement tenants had no windows to put a unit in…
and ‘eric paul’ just seems like a particularly frugal chap (although i’m sure he could afford one)…
this puzzled me…
i assumed fat people were more susceptible to overheating…
finally cheryl agreed to buy me an air conditioning unit…
john the drunk claimed that they went for $50 @ walmart…
he told me i should get christopher to drive me there…
we went to the local hardware store…
the cheapest unit ran for $230…
that was more than she was willing to spend…
chris later told me that we were right for not buying the air conditioner from the store (though as an employee of the company he couldn’t tell us)…
so she sent me a unit in the mail…
she mistakenly sent it to her house…
and so she claimed she just bought another 1 to send (even though she had no use for a window AC unit at her own house)…
i can only assume she was simply unwilling to ship out the unit herself…
after a particularly nasty phone argument with cheryl, the unit finally arrived…
in my frazzled state, i was determined to get the unit in the window as quickly as possible…
without consulting the manual…
the unit ended up falling out the window…
stopped working…
i blamed it on a “shipping accident” + cheryl arrived the next day with the original unit that was shipped to her house…
though the quality of life was markedly improved, this particular model didn’t come equipped with ‘remote control’…
and now i can’t close the window screen…
because the left/right panels don’t quite seal the window shut, i have insects flying into the room…
and these insects refuse to die without putting up a fight…
