DON’T UNDERSTAND CIGAR VOCABULARY? YOU ARE AT THE RIGHT PLACE!
Every special accessory or item has its own terminologies and people praise them in their own style.
At times, the traditional terms associated to a special commodity have some historic background.
The cigars do have a strong history. The term cigar came from a Mayan word ‘sikar’ meaning smoking. In Spanish, it turned as ‘cigarro’ meaning grasshopper or rolled sikar (tobacco). The other names of cigars are Havana, Habano, Vitole, Puro, Stogie and Jules. It has been written as ‘segar’ in the early 19th century.
If you are confused in cigar terminologies, being new to the cigar world, you could find yourself trapped when you enter a cigar shop. You may be tucked on a terminology which you don’t understand exactly, and it could lead to an undesired product purchase. To avoid such intimidation, you must clear the confusions in the terms.
Most of the new cigars users find the Africanado terminologies really confusing and they repeatedly ask for meanings and search for short vocabulary sources. You cannot discuss about your favorite cigar if you don’t know its specific terminology. Here we provide some words and their short descriptions for better understanding and confidence while discussing your favorite Stogie.
Stick: A stick is a term we generally use for a slang or a stand for a cigar.
Smoke: It does not only mean smoke when you talk about cigars. As a whole, it is a synonym for cigar.
Cap: It’s like a cap we wear, covering the head and when removed, revealing what’s underneath. The same goes with a cigar cap.
It is the sealed end of a cigar stick, which we cut to open the cigar.
.
Humidor:
Sounds like a humid chamber, it really is!
A humidor is a place where the cigars sticks are stored in a properly controlled environment and protected from the dryness, worms, beetles, moulds, etc. The temperature and humidity are two major factors that need attention when a humidor is designed. Defects in any of these two important factors may lead to desiccation and damage to the cigars. There is a room in a cigar selling shop with a controlled temperature and humidity conditions which serves as a large humidor. The cigar users have a special kind of box in which they store their cigar sticks. This box is also a kind of humidor.
.
Hygrometer: It is an instrument which helps in measuring the moisture content of an environment. It is frequently used to determine the humidity of a humidor. There are large hygrometers fixed inside the humidors of cigar selling shops.
Some specialized box humidors also contain small sized hygrometers.
.
Head:
It is the end of the cigar which we observe after removing the cap.
This is the first part of the cigar to be ignited.
.
Foot:
It is the part opposite the head.
It is the closing end providing strong and creamy final shots of a cigar stick.
.
Draw:
It is a simple word for effort that you need to make the smoke pass through the whole length of the cigar stick when you inhale.
.
Finish:
The taste of the cigar which is felt on the palate and tongue after finishing the cigar smoking.
.
Spill:
It means a thin woody slice, used in old times to lighten up a cigar stick.
.
*burn* –>
Means the typical burning style of a cigar as a whole.
It defines the smoothness as well as the duration of burn.
.
(a cigar is a ‘rolled bundle’ of ‘dried’ + ‘fermented’ tobacco leaves made to be smoked)
.
(they are produced in a wide variety of ‘sizes’ + ‘shapes’)
.
(since the 1900s, almost all ‘cigars’ are made up of 3 distinct components…)
*the ‘filler’*
*the ‘binder leaf’*
(which holds the ‘filler’ together)
*the ‘wrapper leaf’*
(which is often the best leaf used)
.
Often there will be a cigar band printed with the cigar manufacturer’s logo.
(modern cigars often come with 2 bands, especially Cuban Cigar bands, showing Limited Edition (Edición Limitada) bands displaying the year of production)
.
Cigar tobacco is grown in significant quantities primarily in Central America and the islands of the Caribbean, including
Cuba,
the Dominican Republic,
Haiti,
Honduras,
Mexico,
Ecuador,
Nicaragua,
Guatemala,
Panama, and
‘puerto rico’
.
it is also produced in the Eastern United States, the Mediterranean countries of Italy and Spain (in the Canary Islands), and in Indonesia and the Philippines of ‘southeast asia’)
The origins of cigar smoking are unknown.
A Mayan ceramic pot from Guatemala dating back to the 10th century depicts people smoking tobacco leaves tied with a string.
Regular cigar smoking is known to carry serious health risks including increased risk of developing various types of cancer and cardiovascular illnesses.
(the word ‘cigar’ originated from “sikar,” the mayan-indian word for ‘smoking’, which became ‘cigarro’ in spanish, probably from maya ‘sicar’ “to smoke rolled tobacco leaves,” from ‘sic’ “tobacco;” or from or influenced by the spanish word cigarra (meaning ‘grasshopper’))
.
.
(a cigarillo is a short, narrow cigar)
(unlike cigarettes, cigarillos are wrapped in tobacco leaves or brown, tobacco-based paper)
(‘cigarillos’ are smaller than regular cigars but usually larger than cigarettes)
(‘cigarillos’ are usually made without filters, and are meant to be smoked like a ‘cigar’ and not inhaled (except those made in this form only for specific ‘tax issues’))
(from spanish cigarrillo, meaning “cigarette”, in turn from cigarro (“cigar”) + -illo (diminutive suffix), pronounced [siɣaˈriʝo] in parts of Latin America or [θiɣaˈriʎo] in Spain)
(generally, a cigarillo contains about 3 grams of tobacco, the length varies from 3 to 4 in. (7 – 10 cm) and the diameter is about 6 to 9 mm, usually 8 mm)
(comparatively, a cigarette contains less than 1 gram of tobacco and is about 31⁄4 in. (8 cm) in length and 8 mm in diameter)
Most cigarillos are machine-made, which is cheaper than hand-rolling.
It is unusual to store them in humidors, partly because they are smoked in large quantities and so have a short shelf-life.
Cheap cigarillos are typically marketed as a brand rather than with the term cigarillo.
.
(in ‘the united kingdom’, common consumer brands include…)
‘henri wintermans’

Clubmaster

i purchase the cigars for $1.50 at the motel front desk…i inhale the smoke…this can’t be good for me…

(it was freezing)
i also dropped my black n milds in the toilet
(i smoked them anyway once they dried)
i bought a half black n mild for 75 cents

13 august 2014:
i’m finally giving in and spending the last of my money on black n milds from the motel front desk…the indian was distracted and sold me one for a dollar last night…it lasted me the evening…it doesn’t feel very good going in (especially when coupled with greasy microwave pizza + energy drinks)…but it does give an occasional fleeting buzz…i was worried that it was really destroying my voice…but the voice seemed to be in working order the following day…a slight nostalgia from last winter (when i was still in the motel)…

(i’m already starting to cough in anticipation of the black n milds)
i was first introduced to the “black & mild” (a pipe tobacco cigar) while living in brick (via damkani). it seemed to be the “poor man’s tobacco” (as one can buy one unit at a time). i assumed that you were supposed to inhale the smoke and catch a buzz, but its distinction as “cigar” makes me not quite so sure…
