(2020年夏季オリンピック, Nisen Nijū-nen Kaki Orinpikku),[1] officially known as the Games of the XXXII Olympiad (Japanese: 第三十二回オリンピック競技大会, Hepburn: Dai Sanjūni-kai Orinpikku Kyōgi Taikai)[2] and commonly known as Tokyo 2020 (tōkyō ni-zero-ni-zero) or the Recovery Olympics (Fukkō Gorin (復興五輪), in reference to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster recovery)

.

The 2020 Summer Olympics is an upcoming international multi-sport event that is scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020 in Tokyo, Japan, with preliminary events in some sports beginning on 22 July.

Tokyo was selected as the host city during the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina on 7 September 2013.[4] This will be the second time that Japan and specifically Tokyo has hosted the Summer Olympic Games, the first being in 1964, making it the first city in Asia to host the summer Games twice. Overall, these will be the fourth Olympic Games to be held in Japan, which also hosted the Winter Olympics in 1972 (Sapporo) and 1998 (Nagano). The 2020 Games will be the second of three consecutive Olympics to be held in East Asia, the first being the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang County, South Korea, and the next being the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China.

These Games will see the introduction of new and additional competitions at the Summer Olympics, including 3×3 basketball, freestyle BMX and Madison cycling, as well as further mixed events.

(under new IOC policies that allow the host organizing committee to add sports to the Olympic programme to augment the permanent core Olympic events, these Games will see karate, sport climbing, surfing and skateboarding make their Olympic debuts, as well as the return of baseball and softball for the first time since 2008)

*the summer olympic games – first held in 1896 – is an international multi-sport event that is hosted by a different city every 4 years*

.

The most recent Olympics were held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The International Olympic Committee organizes the games and oversees the host city’s preparations.

In each Olympic event, gold medals are awarded for first place, silver medals are awarded for second place, and bronze medals are awarded for third;

this tradition began in 1904.

The Winter Olympic Games were created due to the success of the Summer Olympics.

The Olympics have increased in scope from a 42-event competition with fewer than 250 male competitors from 14 nations in 1896 to 302 events with 10,768 competitors (5,992 men, 4,776 women) from 204 nations in 2012.

Eighteen countries have hosted the Summer Olympics.

The United States has hosted five Summer Olympics (1904, 1932, 1984, 1996 and either 2024 or 2028), more than any other nation, while Great Britain and France have hosted three Summer Olympics, all in London (1908, 1948, 2012), and all in Paris (1900, 1924 and either 2024 or 2028), respectively.

Two cities have hosted two Summer Olympics: Athens (1896, 2004), and Tokyo (1964, 2020).

Tokyo is the first city outside of the Western world to host the Summer Olympics multiple times.

Asia has hosted the Summer Olympics four times (1964, 1988, 2008, 2020) in Japan, South Korea, and China.

The only Summer Olympics held in the Southern Hemisphere have been in Australia (1956, 2000) and Brazil (2016).

The 2016 Games were the first Summer Olympics that were held in South America and the first that were held during the local winter season.

Africa has yet to host a Summer Olympics.

Only five countries—Greece, Australia, France, Great Britain, and Switzerland—have been represented at every Summer Olympic Games.

(the only country to have won at least one gold medal at every Summer Olympic Games is ‘Great Britain’)

(the ‘United States’ leads the all-time medal table)
