During the interwar period, Woolf was a significant figure in London literary society and a central figure in the influential Bloomsbury Group of intellectuals.
(her best-selling works include the novels Mrs Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927) and Orlando (1928),
and the book-length essay A Room of One’s Own (1929), with its dictum, “A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction”)
(‘woolf’ suffered from severe bouts of mental illness throughout her life and committed suicide by drowning in 1941 at the age of ’59’)
(i find woolf’s life to have striking parallels with sylvia plath’s ‘march to the oven’)
a “proto-plath” if you will…
despite all her alleged anti-semitism, virginia woolf married a jew…
@ age 30, virginia woolf married jewish writer leonard wolf (age 32)
(similarly, ted hughes was a british writer 2 years older than plath)
(so essentially both women married men who were “foreign” to the culture that they’d grown up on)
(most importantly, both committed suicide in oddball / attention-seeking ways)
virginia woolf held out a bit longer…
(she was 59 years old when she “took the proverbial plunge”)
(she filled her overcoat with stones and drowned herself in a nearby river)
(why are so many women writers cursed with early deaths?)
(can their constitutions not withstand the creative covenant?)
