"our favorite guitarists"

(at age 8 i got into “guitar music”)

(“winter 1993”)
(“grunge”)
(via shane taylor)
(his older brother jeffrey was the first real “guitarist” i knew)

(so i suppose the “pearl jam” guitarists were my formative influences)

“mike mccready”
(lead guitar)

“stone gossard”
(rhythm guitar)

(at age 11 i got into “jimi hendrix” and “the beatles” simultaneously)
(with “the beatles anthologies”)
(and the jimi hendrix greatest hits CD “the ultimate experience”)

(i wanted to learn the george harrison guitar parts so i could play the beatles songs)
(hendrix was the first guitarist to get me interested in the “guitar solo”)
(it was his guitar solo on the blues-rock track “red house” that first floored me)

(“that’s alright i still got my guitar look out!”)

(in 2005 i started looking to ‘prince’ as an artistic inspiration)
(like hendrix, he was a racially ambiguous guitar shredder with a totally flamboyant and technically assured presentation)

(and i’d nominate “slash” as their successor)
(another biracial visually + sonically one-of-a-kind guitar shredder)

(“purple haze” –> “purple rain” –> “november rain”)

(them you have “tom morello” in the 90s)
(another big influence on me)
(right after slash during my junior year of high school)

(morello also went to harvard)
(and played in a totally original way)

(my two big albums of that period were “rage against the machine” and “appetite for destruction”)
