-[pro tools] is a “digital audio workstation” developed + released by “avid technology” for the [“microsoft windows” / ‘OS X’] operating systems which can be used for a wide range of ‘sound recording’ + ‘sound production’ purposes-

(‘pro tools’ can run as ‘stand-alone software’, or operate using a range of external analog / digital converters + internal “PCI local bus” (PCI) (or PCIe audio cards) with on-board ‘digital signal processors’ (DSP) to provide effects such as ‘reverb’ + ‘compression’)

(like all ‘digital audio work-station’ software’-, ‘pro tools’ can perform the functions of a multi-track ‘tape recorder’ / ‘audio mixer’, along with additional features that can only be performed in the ‘digital domain’ – such as ‘non-destructive editing’ – using the ‘undo feature’, which allows an engineer to undo any changes she or he does not like)

(most of ‘pro tools’ basic functions can be controlled within ‘edit’ / ‘mix’ windows, which the user can see on a ‘computer screen’)

(the ‘edit window’ displays [‘audio’ / ‘musical’ instrument digital interface] (MIDI) tracks, + provides ‘graphical representation’ of the ‘information’ recorded/imported)

(here, ‘audio’ can be edited in a ‘non-linear’ / ‘non-destructive’ fashion)

(‘pro tools’ supports 16-bit / 24-bit / 32-bit / 64-bit-float audio)

(at sample rates up to 192 kHz)

(‘pro tools’ can handle WAV, AIFF, AIFC, mp3, ‘windows media audio’ (WMA), and SDII audio files and ‘quicktime’ video files)

(it features ‘time code’, ‘tempo maps’, ‘elastic audio’, ‘automation’ and ‘surround sound’ abilities)

(the ‘pro tools’ mix engine has traditionally employed 48-bit ‘fixed point arithmetic’, but ‘floating point’ is also used in some cases, such as with “Pro Tools HD Native”)

(the new ‘HDX hardware’ uses ’64-bit floating point summing’)

Still best-suited to linear recording

It’s hard to know where to start with Pro Tools, which remains an industry standard in recording studios around the world

The software has never had quite the same impact in the home recording market, but knowledge of it certainly puts you at an advantage if you want to work in the industry

Recent updates have seen Avid improving Pro Tools’ workflow.

You can now update tracks and timeline sections during playback,

so you can experiment with effects, presets, loop points, etc, without ever stopping the music.

As such, your creativity can flourish uninterrupted.

There’s also Avid Cloud Collaboration, for cloud-based project storage,

while the Avid Marketplace, which is designed to connect you with others in the audio community.

Whether all of this will be enough to significantly grow the Pro Tools user base remains to be seen, but existing fans are unlikely to look anywhere else
