“school plays”

*usually on an ‘annual basis’*

(although starting in high school, ‘theater students’ put on ‘fall plays’ in first 2 (of 4) semesters)

(and close out the ‘academic year’ with a ‘spring play’)

*kindergarten*
(“grade 0”?)
(“age 5”)

“golden retriever”

(with ‘paul’ as a ‘dalmation’)
(‘white’ with ‘black’ spots)
(or ‘black’ with ‘white’ spots)
(“go ask MJ”)
(“OH JAY”)
(“OH…KAAAY…”
“as they say in…”

.

*grade 1*
“age 6”
“acrobat”
(“acrobatics”)

.

*grade 2*
“age 7”
“dick tracy”

.

*grade 3*
“punisher”
(the marvel antihero)
(as played by ‘dolph lundgren’)

in third grade i was a lion…
(although i wanted to be the professor…)

.

*grade 4*
“batman”

in fourth grade i was a surfer…
(although i wanted to be a fisherman…)

*cue “gone fishin’”*

.

*grade 5*
(age 10)
(???)

.

*grade 6*
(age 11)

in sixth grade, i was a greaser…
(i sang the opening solo in “rock and roll party”)

“we were cruising round town last saturday night…my buddies and me, we were looking alright…we went to the dance and when we opened the door…there was a rock ‘n roll party on the dance floor…”

There was Long, Tall Sally and the Duke of Earl,
Johnny B. Goode and his Surfer Girl.
The Leader of the Pack came with Peggy Sue.
Good golly, Miss Molly was even there, too.

Hey, hey, Paula and Louie, Louie.
Look out now, ‘cause it’s Judy’s turn to cry
Come on ev’rybody, it’s a rock n’ roll party tonight.

My boyfriend’s back: fun, fun, fun!
You can’t hurry love, but you’re still the one.
How about some R-E-S-P-E-C-T?
Only if you save the last dance for me.

I heard it through the grapevine
You were dancing in the street
And tossin’ and a turnin’ to the teen beat.

You talk too much; remember walkin’ in the sand?
One fine day I want to hold your hand, hold your hand, hold your hand…

rock n’ roll!

(by jay althouse)
(thanks janet fenner!)

the utter neutering of “rock”…

i also sang a solo in a “pocahontas” medley…

(and i was the farmer father “sam adams” in our class play)

.

*grade 7*
(“bob dole”)

(the republican presidental candidate)

(defeated by democrat ‘bill clinto’ for his 2nd term in office)

(the election was only a few days after halloween)
(is it ‘first tuesday of november’?)

(my parents voted dole)
(but i was probably hoping that ‘clinton’ would win)

(this must have been around the time when i started equating ‘republican’ with “racist”)

(and since my schools rarely had more than 1 black student per class, i think i overestimated how miserable it was to be a poor minority in this alleged ‘land of the free’)

.

*FALL 1998*
(‘age 13’)

(in ‘8th grade’, i played “albert peterson” in our middle school production of the 1960 play ‘bye bye birdie)
