*QUESTION #1*

Hello people,

A few weeks ago, the plugin was showing me that my site had about 100 broken links.

And today I see that it is showing 266 broken links.

Suddenly the plugin registered more than 150 broken links at once. This is weird.

I went to check the reason for this increase, and I realized that this increase was due to the plugin identifying Instagram links as…

“429 Unknown Error”

The plugin registered that these Instagram links are redirecting to the Instagram login page

https://www.instagram.com/accounts/login/?next=/xxxxxxxxxxxxx/.

I selected all 266 links and chose the option “Check again”, but nothing happened.

In fact, in addition to this problem with Instagram links, I am frequently receiving notification of broken links and when I go to check, several of these links are not broken.

So, I choose the option “Check again”, the plugin checks for a long time and in the end nothing happens.

It appears that this option “Check again” does not work because the link is ok,

but I click on “Check again” and nothing happens.

And the plugin is registering many false positives.

Thank you!

Rodrigo

Hi @vejapixel

I hope you’re well today!

The 429 HTTP status means “too many requests” and together with redirect to “login” page it simply means that Instagram is detecting “automated” traffic (from not logged-in user) and “rejects” it.

This is, unfortunately, quite often a case with some services/sites as they have no way of knowing “the purpose” of such check.

I mean: they can’t know whether such “automated” request from your site is because you’re checking if link is correct or if you are trying to “flood” their servers or “scrape” content illegally…

So they are throttling/rejecting such requests and that may result in such false alerts

.

If there’s that many links I’d try this first…

in “Link Checker -> General” settings set “check each link” option to [’72 hours’ / ‘3 days’] or more
(even up to [‘120 hours’ / ‘5 days’]

then temporarily disable plugin for [1 – 2 days] so it wouldn’t check anything
(so won’t also “ping” these ‘instagram links’ at all)

then re-enable it but do not try to force “check again”

but just let it work for next few days and see if that’s still happening or if those links are gradually “getting back” as valid)

If they still do not, let us know, please.

“please…?

“please what?”

(that’s ypur 2nd ‘typo /

Best regards,

Adam

Hello @wpmudev-support8

I did what you said, but it didn’t solve anything

So I marked all the Instagram links that were showing “429 Unknown Error” and selected it as “not broken”, and after that your plugin registered all these links as ‘false positive’

However, as my authors put more instagram links in the posts, your plugin checks and records it as “429 Unknown Error”:

https://prnt.sc/uwa42l

This seems to have no end

Hi @vejapixel

Thank you for the update.

Do you use any plugin to embed the links on the post, or just copy and paste?

Best Regards

Hi @vejapixel

Thanks for response!

I’d say that for now the workaround would be to actually exclude Instagram URLs from being checked at all.

We’ve got a lot of various improvements planned for the plugin for future (including some related to Instagram) but for now since it’s not possible to “force” Instagram to accept all these requests, such exclusion would at least spare you new 429 errors coming over and over again.

There’s an option to exclude URLs on “Settings -> Link Checker -> Which Links To Check” page at the bottom.

In the “Exlusion List” box you’d just need to put a word like “instagram” or “instagram.com” and that should make the plugin ignore these URLs

Kind regards,

Adam
