The microphone at the bottom of the AirPod’s stem is an outward-facing or beamforming microphone primarily used for capturing your voice during calls and for Siri commands.
Here is a breakdown of the microphone types and their functions on AirPods (especially Pro models)
.
Outward-facing microphone
(at the bottom of the stem):
This is the main microphone that points towards your mouth.
It uses beamforming technology to focus on your voice and filter out external noise, ensuring clear audio during phone calls and interactions with Siri.
In models with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), this mic also detects external sounds to help generate “anti-noise” to cancel them out
.
Inward-facing microphone:
This microphone is located inside the ear tip/grill area, facing your ear canal.
Its main function is to listen for unwanted internal sounds within your ear and also helps in optimizing audio quality and noise cancellation by fine-tuning the sound that reaches your eardrum.
So, the visible microphone hole at the very bottom of the stem is primarily for picking up your voice (outward mic function for voice pickup)
