The inseam of pants is the length from the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.

It’s a key measurement for finding well-fitting pants

How to measure your inseam

Use a measuring tape to measure from the bottom of your ankle to just below your crotch.

Lay a pair of pants you like the fit of flat on the floor and measure from the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.

Pinch the measuring tape between your thumb and finger to mark the measurement if you can’t read it in the mirror

Using your inseam measurement

Use your inseam measurement to find pants that fit well.

When shopping online, use your inseam measurement to get an idea of how long the pants will be.

Add about 1/2 inch to your inseam measurement if you plan to machine wash the pants.

Consider the height of the heels you’ll wear with the pants.

Inseam length and body type

Inseam length varies by body type, so buying “tall” or “short” pants may not always give you the right fit.

For example, a person who is 5’4″–5’8″ might have a regular inseam of 31 in.
