In the macOS Preview app, the Smart Lasso is a specialized selection tool designed to help you extract objects by automatically snapping to their edges.
How to access the Smart Lasso
Open an image in the Preview app.
Show the Markup Toolbar by clicking the pen icon (Markup) in the top-right corner or pressing Shift + Command + A.
Select the tool: On the far left of the Markup toolbar, click the chevron (down arrow) next to the Selection tools (usually looks like a dashed rectangle) and choose Smart Lasso.
How it works
Edge Detection: Unlike the standard Lasso which follows your cursor exactly, the Smart Lasso creates a thick red border as you trace.
Automatic Snapping: You only need to trace roughly around the edges; the tool analyzes color intensity and contrast to “snap” the selection path to the object’s actual outline.
Closing the Path: Complete the selection by returning to your starting point. Once selected, you can Copy (Command + C) to paste the object elsewhere or Crop to remove the background.
Quick Tips
Precision: If the selection isn’t tight enough, try zooming in on the image before tracing
.
Instant Alpha: For solid or simple backgrounds, the Instant Alpha tool (the magic wand icon) is often faster than the Smart Lasso.
Would you like to know how to use the Instant Alpha tool for even faster background removal?
