Open-end head width ≈
1.6× to 2.0× the jaw width
.
So if:
Jaw width = 8 mm
Expect total head width ≈ 13–16 mm
This varies by:
Manufacturer
Whether it’s slimline or heavy-duty
Angle of the open end (15° offsets add bulk)
What you can reliably infer
If the slot is barely wider than the fastener → open end probably won’t fit
If the slot width ≥ ~2× fastener size → good odds
Box ends almost always need more clearance than open ends
If you want to formalize this (which I know you do 😄):
Measure one wrench head
Create a personal ratio table
Treat it like your screwdriver blade-width taxonomy
TL;DR mental stack
Points ≠ size (points = geometry, size = diameter)
Box end = strength, open end = access
Righty-tighty / lefty-loosey, not toward/away
Open-end head ≈ ~1.6–2× jaw width (rule-of-thumb)
