The Render Delay effect filter in OBS Studio holds back the visual rendering of a source, group, or scene by a specified number of milliseconds. [1, 2]
Key Functions and Features
Audio and Video Sync: It is primarily used to sync video feeds (such as a webcam or capture card) with microphone audio when your video appears faster or out-of-sync with your voice. [1, 3]
Delay Control: You set the delay time in milliseconds using the Delay MS property. (Note: 1,000 milliseconds equals 1 second). [4]
Cap Limit: The standard Render Delay filter has a maximum built-in limit of 500 milliseconds (0.5 seconds) per filter instance, though you can stack multiple filter instances with different names if you need a slightly longer hold. [2, 5, 6]
Visual / Creative Effects: Beyond simple synchronization, creators use stacked duplicate sources with incremental render delays to build motion trails, ghosting, or layered echo effects. [7, 8]
Render Delay vs. Video Delay (Async)
- Render Delay: Only delays the video rendering of a source, group, or scene. It caps out at 500ms per filter.
- Video Delay (Async): Applied directly to video capture devices. It delays both audio and video streams together and supports much longer offsets (up to 20,000 milliseconds or 20 seconds) without a 500ms cap. [2, 3, 5, 6, 9]
Are you trying to fix an audio-to-video sync issue with a webcam/capture card, or are you looking to create a visual effect?
