TOONTRACK EZD Pop/Rock
EZdrummer core library
In 2005 Toontrack Music was contacted by Pat Thrall with a request to record drums
for the Superior Drummer software engine at the New York studio where Pat had his
professional home. We all knew Pat’s work (with Glenn Hughes, Black Crowes, etc) and
jumped at the opportunity to work with one of our heros.
We became even more excited when Pat enrolled Neil Dorfsman, another
long-time hero of ours, to add his talents, passion, and experience to the
recordings. Neil has been around since the 70s recording and producing artists like,
Kiss, Bruce Springsteen, Dire Straits, Sting etc.
Pat also brought along renowned live and session drummer Nir Z, whose credits
include such diverse acts as Genesis and Joss Stone, to play his GMS drums for the
sessions. Nir was born in Israel and started playing at the age of 12, studying drums and
percussion under Shaoul Shaval and later on David Rich, former student of Joe Morello.
Credits
Produced and engineered by Neil Dorfsman, Pat Thrall, Mattias Eklund & Henrik
Kjellberg. Played by Nir Z
All instruments recorded and produced at Avatar Studios New York (formerly known
as Power Station) on the 1st of October, 2005.

EZDRUMMER

(i began utilizing this program in late spring 2007)

(developed by toontrack)
(a simplified version of “superior drummer 2.0”)

ranges from A(-1) – F(3)
(from “pedal chick” to “hats (sequence soft)”)

Screen shot 2013-01-27 at 10.57.22 PM

i visited manhattan’s guitar center in union square with pellabear and purchased new drum sampling software for several hundred dollars.

at the counter salesman’s insistence, i opted for ‘ezdrummer’ (like me and countless other musicians around the world, he identified himself as a ‘one-man band’)…

when i found that the ezdrummer software was not fully compatible with my version of basic cubase SE, i decided to order cubase essential 4 off the steinberg website…

‘humanize’ feature
(makes grooves slightly less precise / mechanical)
(moves them slightly off beat)
(to create ‘illusion’ of “spontaneity”)

(*ezdrummer manual highly recommends this feature*)

POP/ROCK:

groove 1

beats 1, 2, 4 are quarter notes on the beat
beat 3 is a triplet!
“innaresting…”
(to quote neil young)

groove 2:

play all four quarter notes in measure as triplets
(giving the sense of two measures of 6/8)
(although these are 1/3 quarter notes instead of 1/2 quarter notes)
(so the 4/4 resembling 6/8 is actually slower because what it considers 1/12 of a measure the actual 6/8 records as 1/8 of a measure)
(“speed” = “how soon is next repetition?”)
(again “broken record” dual meaning)

groove 3:

beat 1 is sixteenth note on first half of first half / second half plays second note of triplet

groove 15

hats 9th rock open:

beats 1 and 3 contain 2 eighth notes (swung / aka delay in attack of second eighth note)
(at most extreme, 2/3 1/3 time difference)
(though i suppose you could go 5/6 1/6 to make things even more unbalanced in favor of the first)
(swing discriminates against second note)
(or does second note gain more attention due to its late arrival?)
(whenever i’m late, i just end up feeling ashamed and try to make my entry as inconspicuous as possible)
beat 2 is just a quarter note
(and beat 4 seems to be the same way, yet it sneaks in a lead-in note to next measure on its final chance to do so)

beats 2 3 4 are quarter note triplets
beat 2 is divided into two sixteenth notes and an eighth note triplet
