‘how do i replace my lost “social security” card?

I’m checking the current official SSA steps and whether New Jersey residents can do it online or need an office visit.

The main official path is through SSA online first, then an appointment if online isn’t available.

I’m checking the document rules so I don’t miss an identity requirement.

Thought for 57s

The fastest way is to start with SSA’s official replacement-card page and see whether you can do it online through a personal my Social Security account.

If you’re eligible, SSA says you can request the replacement there and they’ll mail the new card in 5 to 10 business days after completing the request.

If you can’t do it fully online, SSA says to either begin the application online and schedule an office visit, or fill out Form SS-5 and bring it with your required documents to a local Social Security office or Card Center.

SSA also recommends making an appointment before visiting.

For a standard adult replacement card, SSA says you generally need one current identity document showing your name and identifying information, such as a U.S. passport/passport card, U.S. driver’s license, or state-issued ID card.

If you were born outside the U.S., SSA says you may also need documents proving U.S. citizenship or current lawful, work-authorized status.

SSA only accepts original documents or copies certified by the issuing agency—not regular photocopies or notarized copies.

A few useful notes:

SSA’s Office of Inspector General says replacement Social Security cards are free, and Form SS-5 says there’s a limit of 3 replacement cards per calendar year and 10 in a lifetime, with some exceptions.

So the practical sequence is:

Sign in or create a my Social Security account and try the online replacement.

If SSA won’t let you complete it online, print/fill SS-5 and gather your identity document.

Use the SSA office locator and make an appointment before going in.

Here are the official SSA pages I’m basing this on: the replacement-card page, the documents page, and Form SS-5.

If you want, I can also give you the exact document combo you’d likely need based on your situation, like U.S.-born adult vs foreign-born adult vs name change.
