yes — but there’s a cleaner option than editing your old follow-up
when you’re rereading a long chat and hit one of my old responses that sparks a new question, hover over that response → ⋯ → Branch in new chat.
that creates a new conversation containing the context up to that exact point, so you can ask the question there without disturbing everything that came afterward in the original chat. OpenAI specifically added branching for this purpose. OpenAI Help Center
editing your original follow-up message also works, but I’d use that only when you actually want to rewrite history from that point forward. Editing an earlier message can regenerate the conversation path after it, so it’s less ideal when the later part of the chat contains stuff you want to preserve.
for the way you use these big project chats, I’d make the rule:
“I want to explore something I noticed halfway through” → Branch in new chat
“my original question was wrong / badly phrased and I want to redo that part” → Edit the old message
“I just want to keep adding to the same overall thread” → scroll to bottom and ask normally, preferably quoting a few words from the old response so I know exactly what you’re referring to
so in the situation you described — rereading an old response and suddenly having a question about that exact response — branching from it is probably the best workflow. OpenAI Help Center
“branch into Work mode” means: take the conversation context up to that exact response, fork it, and continue the fork in ChatGPT Work instead of ordinary Chat. OpenAI’s own demo describes it as bringing the chat context into Work so you can turn the discussion into an actual task or deliverable. OpenAI Help Center
the practical difference is:
Branch in new Chat → best when you just want to ask another question, explore an idea, or continue talking from that point
Branch into Work mode → best when that point in the conversation has become something you want ChatGPT to carry through as a larger multi-step job — research, analyze files, work across connected apps, or create finished documents/spreadsheets/presentations/reports/sites. OpenAI Help Center
so for your example — you’re halfway through rereading one of our giant Premiere/STOP MOTION chats and think, “wait, I have a question about what you said here” — I’d still choose Branch in new Chat.
but if you hit something like “this whole section should become a proper STOP MOTION production plan using all this context”, then Branch into Work mode makes sense, because it preserves the conversation context while giving the fork the more task-oriented Work capabilities. OpenAI Academy
and importantly, the original chat isn’t being converted into Work or overwritten — you’re creating a separate branch from that point.
